As part of The Nhlekx Lifestyle, we are thrilled to introduce our Monday story series, “The Sound of My Mother’s Voice.” In this series, we will delve into pressing societal issues such as substance abuse, gender-based violence (GBV), the impact of gangsterism on our townships, and much more.
The phrase “The Sound of My Mother’s Voice” resonates deeply with many of us. As young adults, we often find ourselves reflecting on the advice our guardians imparted to us. When faced with challenges or mistakes, their words echo in our minds, reminding us of the consequences our actions can have—not just on us, but on those who care about us.
In a tragic incident this morning, two young women in their late 20s and a young man in his early 20s were mugged in Orange Farm, Extension 3, between the BP garage and The Shack. They were returning from a nearby tavern, formerly known as Nora’s Tavern, when the robbery occurred around 3 a.m.
During the attack, the young man was struck in the back with a brick as he tried to escape. One of the women managed to flee but sustained injuries in the process. Tragically, the other woman was kidnapped by the gangsters and was found to have been raped about an hour later. All three victims were taken to the Extension 2 clinic at around 6 a.m. We will provide further updates as more information becomes available.

To my fellow Orange Farm residents: It is evident that criminals are active, and the patrollers cannot protect everyone. Please ensure you have secure transportation when leaving local taverns, pubs, or clubs. We are tired of witnessing young people who stay out late becoming victims of murder, sexual assault, or robbery. As the weekend approaches, remember that your guardians are always anxious, never knowing what might happen.
